2012 Awards: UMvC3 Match of the Year

To continue our 2012 awards, today we'll present what we thought were our top matches of the year in Super Street Fighter IV and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

Let's start with UMvC3, because people love that so much around here. Out of the four of us, we all picked a match that involved Filipino Champ. But three of us chose the same match, and that received our UMvC3 Match of the Year Award.

Consider what Filipino Champ did in the UMvC3 tournament at Evolution 2012. He did not lose a game before Top 8, which is insane. And then, he never had an in-match lead in the Top 8 preliminaries, which is also insane. Somehow, he survived all of that and got to the finals, where he faced Infrit.

After Filipino Champ won Game 1 of the first finals, I just had this feeling it was going to be a 6-0. It was as if Filipino Champ suddenly figured it all out and the finals was going to be a walk. Filipino Champ forced a second finals in what seemed to be only a few minutes time. But Infrit rallied and the championship was up for grabs between the two men.

This match will one of these matches that will be replayed for years to come, even if there are 500 updates to UMvC3.

2012 Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Match of the Year: Filipino Champ vs. Infrit, the Evolution 2012 championship match.

Antonio's take: The intensity in that room -- and I know you guys can attest to this, because you were all there -- was comparable to few. It really felt like the final Giants drive in Super Bowl XLII, and every game Infrit won was as electrifying as David Tyree's now-famous catch. Then the way Champ recomposed himself in Grand Finals really spoke volumes about his game, and I came out visibly shaking after watching this match.

Dakota's take: I'm going to have to agree with AJ on this one – my ass was several feet away from my chair because I couldn't keep myself from cheering my heart out during this one. I may have woken some people up with my cheering. This series, and all the matches that encompassed, were ridiculous entertaining and kept my intense faith in the competitive Marvel community for providing some wonderful matches through and through. Both of these players fought their hearts out, and I have the utmost respect for both of these players for putting it all out on the line. No offense to the Champ, but I was rooting for Infrit on this one. Nevertheless, as the comeback for Champ manifested, I was WOW'd beyond belief and the result was, dare I say, marvelous.
